Is the stock market open today for Labor Day? What about bond trading and mail delivery?

Labor Day, observed on the first Monday of September, is a federal holiday in the United States. As such, the financial markets operate on a reduced schedule. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed for regular trading on Monday, Sept. 7. Investors should also note that bond trading through the industry’s standard fixed-income marketplace will be shut for the day, with no electronic trading in U.S. Treasuries or other government securities.

Beyond equities and fixed income, market infrastructure follows the holiday. The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail, and most bank branches will be closed, though online and mobile banking services typically remain available. Futures trading on exchanges like the CME will also be closed, with electronic trading resuming later in the evening.

For market participants, the closure means any orders placed during the day will be queued for execution at Tuesday’s open. The shortened session is a routine event, but it can occasionally amplify volatility when trading resumes, as institutional investors adjust positions after a long weekend. Watch for any economic data releases scheduled for Tuesday morning, as these often set the tone for the week ahead.
