Just like for SpaceX, investors may look to ‘make room’ for AI lab IPOs. These stocks could pay the price.
The prospect of high-profile AI lab IPOs, such as those from OpenAI and Anthropic, is beginning to shape portfolio strategy in a very specific way. The logic is straightforward: if these highly anticipated listings debut to strong demand, investors will need to free up capital to participate. This often means selling existing positions, particularly in technology names that have underperformed or carry a higher risk profile. The effect is similar to the "make room" dynamic seen ahead of major SpaceX share sales, where liquidity is sourced from other corners of the portfolio.
The timing could amplify this pressure. A seasonal tax-planning strategy, where investors harvest losses to offset gains before year-end, may dovetail with the expected listing windows. This creates a confluence of selling pressure: tax-loss harvesting naturally targets poor performers, and the need to raise cash for new AI listings could hit the same vulnerable stocks twice. Consequently, companies that have lagged the broader market rally are most exposed to a double whammy of outflows.
For market watchers, the key is to monitor the correlation between speculative tech valuations and the funding pipelines of these AI labs. If the IPO environment remains robust, the rotation out of laggards could intensify. The real question is not whether these listings will occur, but how much repositioning they will trigger in the secondary market before the first trade even executes.
