Venezuela nears deal to tap disputed $4bn gold reserve - Financial Times

Venezuela's government is reportedly close to an agreement that would allow it to access roughly $4bn in gold reserves currently frozen abroad. According to the Financial Times, the arrangement would involve the disputed holdings being unlocked under conditions acceptable to the parties contesting control of the assets. The reserves have been tied up in legal and political disputes, leaving the government unable to convert them into usable funds.
The development matters beyond Venezuela. Central bank reserves held in foreign jurisdictions are not automatically accessible; sanctions, creditor claims and competing claims of authority can all delay or block a government's access to its own assets. If a deal is completed, it would test whether negotiated settlements can resolve disputes that courts and sanctions regimes have left unresolved.
For observers, the key questions are the terms of any release and who receives the proceeds. A confirmed agreement could ease near-term liquidity pressure, while failure would reinforce how difficult it remains for sovereign reserves to be mobilised when control is contested.
