ECB launches Pontes for tokenised wholesale settlement - The Paypers

medium impactEUR

The European Central Bank has launched Pontes, a new infrastructure for settling tokenised wholesale transactions. The initiative is part of the Eurosystem's broader effort to keep central bank money at the centre of Europe's financial plumbing as more market participants explore distributed ledger technology.

For markets, the significance lies in what wholesale settlement underpins: large-value interbank payments, securities transactions and collateral movements. Tokenised settlement aims to let these transactions be recorded and transferred on programmable platforms while still being anchored in central bank money, rather than in private stablecoins or commercial bank deposits.

What to watch is uptake. The value of such infrastructure depends on whether banks, custodians and trading venues connect to it and whether tokenised instruments reach meaningful volumes. Also relevant is how Pontes interacts with existing systems such as TARGET2 and T2S, and whether it informs longer-term Eurosystem decisions on a digital euro for wholesale use. For now, the launch is best read as infrastructure groundwork rather than an immediate change to market structure.
