ECB wants stablecoin yield ban expanded across crypto lending and staking - Crypto News

The European Central Bank is pushing to extend its proposed ban on stablecoin yield to cover crypto lending and staking as well, according to Crypto News. The original proposal targeted interest paid on stablecoin holdings; the expanded scope would also capture returns generated when those tokens are lent out or used to secure a proof-of-stake network.

The distinction matters because the two activities carry different risk profiles. Lending and staking yields are typically paid by private intermediaries or protocol rules rather than by the issuer, so treating them like deposit interest would push a large share of stablecoin utility — and the revenue it generates — outside the regulatory perimeter the ECB envisions.

For markets, the key question is scope and timing. If EU rules treat staking and lending rewards as prohibited yield, issuers and platforms serving European users may need to restructure products or withdraw them. Watch how the proposal is drafted, whether it distinguishes issuer-paid from third-party rewards, and how other jurisdictions respond.
