Visa partner Reap plans Mexican peso stablecoin launch for round-the-clock FX settlement - CoinDesk

Reap, a payments platform working with Visa, plans to launch a stablecoin pegged to the Mexican peso, aimed at enabling round-the-clock foreign-exchange settlement. The move reflects a broader trend of payment firms exploring tokenized versions of national currencies to address a long-standing friction in cross-border finance: traditional FX and settlement systems generally operate within banking hours and across multiple intermediaries.
For markets, the significance lies less in the token itself than in the settlement model. A peso-backed stablecoin could allow counterparties to transfer value outside standard banking windows, potentially reducing delays in regions where time zones and correspondent banking chains slow transactions. Mexico is a particularly relevant test case, given the scale of remittance flows and trade-linked currency conversion between the peso and the dollar.
What to watch is whether the stablecoin gains real usage in commercial settlement rather than remaining a pilot, and how regulators in Mexico and the United States treat a private peso token used across borders. Adoption will likely depend on liquidity, redemption guarantees, and whether businesses see a clear cost or speed advantage over existing FX channels.
