Wall Street and AI ruined your ‘diversified’ portfolio

The concern here isn't that AI is a fad, but that it has quietly become a shared input across otherwise unrelated holdings. A utility, an industrial, a software company, and a broad index fund can all now carry AI-linked exposure — through capital spending, supplier relationships, or customer demand — without the investor ever choosing an "AI stock." That is how diversification can erode: not by owning too few names, but by owning many names whose fortunes rest on the same assumption.

The relevant question is correlation, not count. If a portfolio's holdings would all suffer from the same disappointment — slower AI spending, delayed returns on data-center investment, or a repricing of AI-adjacent valuations — then the number of tickers overstates the protection actually in place.

What to watch: how companies disclose AI-related revenue and costs, whether capital expenditure plans hold up across earnings seasons, and whether any single theme accounts for a rising share of index returns. None of this argues for abandoning diversified funds. It argues for knowing what a portfolio is really betting on.
