Coinbase users can now borrow USDC against bitcoin at a fixed rate - CoinDesk

Coinbase has introduced a lending feature that allows users to borrow USDC — the dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle — using bitcoin as collateral, with the loan carrying a fixed interest rate. According to CoinDesk, the product gives holders a way to access dollar-denominated liquidity without selling their bitcoin outright.

The structure matters for two reasons. First, a fixed rate removes the uncertainty of variable borrowing costs, which have swung widely with crypto credit conditions in recent years. Second, borrowing against bitcoin rather than selling it lets holders retain exposure to the asset while meeting short-term cash needs — though the collateral remains subject to price moves.

What to watch: the specific rate, collateral requirements and liquidation thresholds, since these determine how much price decline a borrower can absorb before positions are wound down. Also worth monitoring is whether other exchanges follow with competing fixed-rate products. For the broader market, growth in collateralized stablecoin lending can deepen credit availability, but it also concentrates risk in the venues extending it.
