The market is pricing in too many Fed hikes, says the former Dallas Fed chief

Former Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan said the bond market may be pricing in more Federal Reserve rate hikes than the central bank is likely to deliver. His comment is a reminder that rate expectations are a market forecast, not a policy promise.

That distinction matters because Treasury yields and futures markets move on the collective bets of traders. When those bets run ahead of what policymakers have signaled, any softer inflation or employment data can force a rapid repricing. The reverse is also true: hotter data can validate the market's view and push yields higher still.

For investors, the takeaway is not to follow any single forecast, including Kaplan's. Instead, watch the gap between market-implied rate paths and the Fed's own projections, along with incoming inflation and labor data. A narrowing gap suggests calmer conditions; a widening one often signals volatility ahead for bonds and rate-sensitive equities.
