ECB connects payment system to blockchain with launch of Pontes platform - Cyprus Mail

The European Central Bank has launched Pontes, a platform designed to connect its payment infrastructure with blockchain-based settlement systems. The initiative marks a step toward bridging traditional central bank money and distributed ledger technology, a divide that has long complicated institutional use of tokenised assets.
For markets, the significance lies in settlement. Blockchain-based trading of bonds, funds or other assets has often relied on private stablecoins or commercial bank money because central bank money was not directly accessible on those networks. A credible link to central bank settlement could reduce counterparty and liquidity risk, and may make tokenised markets more attractive to regulated institutions.
What to watch is adoption and scope. The key questions are which assets and participants Pontes will support, how quickly it moves beyond testing, and whether other central banks follow with comparable infrastructure. For now, the launch signals that Europe's monetary authority intends to shape how digital asset markets settle, rather than leave that role to private issuers.
