A ‘death cross’ is coming for the dollar. Why Trump will be happy.
A "death cross" occurs when a shorter-term moving average, such as the 50-day, falls below a longer-term average like the 200-day. For the U.S. dollar index, this pattern is now approaching. While it is a lagging indicator rather than a prediction, traders often watch it as confirmation that momentum has shifted from strength to weakness.
The signal carries weight because currency trends feed into broader markets. A softer dollar can ease financial conditions, support commodities and emerging-market assets, and flatter the overseas earnings of U.S. multinationals. It may also reinforce the administration's preference for a more competitive export position, which is why dollar weakness is often viewed as politically convenient in Washington.
What matters more than the crossover itself is whether it holds. Watch the dollar index's 200-day average, U.S. yield differentials, and Federal Reserve policy expectations. If the greenback stabilizes, the signal fades; if it keeps sliding, the move becomes self-reinforcing.
