Stripe to expand stablecoin cards to 100 countries as Privy's Henri Stern takes charge of crypto - CoinDesk

Stripe is expanding its stablecoin-backed payment cards to 100 countries, with Privy's Henri Stern taking charge of its crypto efforts, according to CoinDesk. The move extends a model in which card spending is settled using stablecoins rather than only traditional fiat rails.
The significance lies in distribution. Stablecoins have largely circulated within crypto-native venues; embedding them into everyday card payments across a broad set of markets tests whether they can function as routine payment infrastructure, not just a trading tool. Placing a Privy executive over the crypto unit also suggests Stripe is consolidating wallet and custody capabilities with its payments business.
For markets, the development is worth watching on a few fronts: which countries and card networks go live, whether merchants accept these transactions without distinguishing them from ordinary card payments, and how regulators in each jurisdiction treat stablecoin settlement. Adoption will depend less on the announcement than on settlement costs, licensing clarity, and whether users perceive a practical benefit over existing cards.
