ESMA gives EU crypto platforms 3 months to drop non-MiCA stablecoins such as USDT - CoinDesk

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has set a three-month deadline for EU-licensed crypto platforms to delist stablecoins that do not comply with the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, according to CoinDesk. The move directly affects widely traded tokens such as USDT, which have operated under transitional arrangements since MiCA's stablecoin rules took effect.
For market participants, the key issue is timing. Platforms now face a compressed window to either guide users toward MiCA-compliant alternatives or wind down affected pairs. That process can fragment liquidity, widen spreads on impacted tokens, and push trading volume toward venues outside the EU or toward stablecoins that have secured the required authorisations.
What to watch: which issuers obtain MiCA approval, how exchanges sequence delistings, and whether euro-denominated stablecoins gain ground as replacements. The deadline also tests how uniformly national regulators enforce the framework. For now, the direction is clear — EU-regulated stablecoin markets are moving toward a narrower, licensed set of issuers, with USDT's continued availability in Europe increasingly uncertain.
