ESMA orders EU crypto firms to phase out non-compliant stablecoin services - Traders Union

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has directed crypto firms operating in the EU to phase out services tied to stablecoins that do not meet the bloc's regulatory requirements. The order signals that supervisors are moving from rule-writing into active enforcement under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, which sets reserve, governance and disclosure standards for stablecoin issuers.
For markets, the practical effect is a narrowing of the stablecoin universe available to EU-based users and platforms. Tokens that fail to satisfy MiCA conditions may face delisting or restricted access, which can fragment liquidity between EU and non-EU venues and complicate trading pairs that rely on affected stablecoins.
What to watch: how individual national regulators and exchanges interpret the timeline, whether issuers seek authorisation or exit the EU market, and how liquidity migrates toward compliant alternatives. The development is less about any single token than about the EU's willingness to enforce its framework, a precedent other jurisdictions may study as they draft their own stablecoin rules.
