ESMA’s stablecoin regulation urges firms to halt services for non-compliant tokens - The Cryptonomist

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has issued guidance urging firms under its supervision to stop offering services tied to stablecoins that do not meet the requirements of the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. The move signals that European regulators intend to apply the bloc's new crypto rules consistently, rather than allowing a lengthy transition period for tokens that fall short of compliance standards.
For market participants, the practical effect is a narrowing of the stablecoin universe available through regulated European venues. Firms may need to review which tokens they list, trade, or otherwise support, and assess whether those assets satisfy MiCA's reserve, disclosure, and governance expectations. Tokens that cannot demonstrate compliance could face reduced liquidity and access to EU-based users.
What to watch next is how individual national regulators translate ESMA's guidance into enforcement, and whether major stablecoin issuers adjust their structures to remain available in Europe. The broader significance is that stablecoin oversight in the EU is shifting from legislative design to active supervision, a transition that could influence how other jurisdictions approach similar rules.
