Circle CEO signals mainstream transition with expansion across 40 developing nations - CoinDesk

Circle's chief executive has framed the company's expansion into roughly 40 developing nations as a sign that stablecoin infrastructure is moving from a niche crypto tool toward mainstream financial use. The push centres on regions where access to dollar-based banking and cross-border payments is often limited, positioning Circle's USDC as a settlement layer for remittances, business payments and consumer transfers.

The significance lies less in any single market than in the direction of travel. Stablecoins pegged to major currencies are increasingly discussed as a way to move value across borders faster and at lower cost than traditional correspondent banking, particularly where local currencies are volatile or capital controls restrict access. That makes emerging markets a logical testing ground for adoption at scale.

What to watch: whether usage translates into durable transaction volume rather than one-off curiosity, and how regulators in these jurisdictions respond. Licensing requirements, reserve transparency and local currency rules will shape how far this model can spread. For markets, the broader question is whether stablecoin growth complements existing payment rails or begins to compete with them.
