Marqeta and Coinbase Collaborate to Enable Stablecoin-Backed Card Payments - Business Wire

Marqeta and Coinbase have announced a collaboration aimed at enabling card payments backed by stablecoins. Under the arrangement, stablecoin balances held through Coinbase can be used to fund card transactions, with Marqeta providing the card-issuing and payment-processing infrastructure. In practical terms, this links a crypto-native asset to the existing card rails that merchants already accept.

The development matters because it addresses a long-standing friction point: stablecoins have largely circulated within crypto ecosystems, while everyday spending runs through traditional card networks. Bridging the two could give stablecoin holders a more direct way to transact without first converting to fiat currency. For Marqeta, it expands its issuing platform into crypto-linked payment flows; for Coinbase, it adds a consumer utility layer to stablecoin holdings.

What to watch is execution rather than the announcement itself. Key questions include which markets and card networks are supported, how settlement and conversion mechanics work behind the scenes, and what fees apply. Regulatory treatment of stablecoin-funded payments also remains a moving target. Adoption will ultimately depend on whether the experience proves as seamless as using a conventional debit or credit card.
