Retail traders buy the dip on chip stocks — but Robinhood gets burned by the crypto market

Retail investors used the recent market volatility as an opportunity to add chip stocks, according to Robinhood's CFO, who said traders were not deterred from buying semiconductor names "that they had really done research on." The comment suggests that for at least part of the retail base, sharp price swings were treated as an entry point rather than a reason to step back.

The picture was less encouraging on the crypto side, where Robinhood itself absorbed the impact of a weaker digital-asset market. The contrast is notable: enthusiasm for researched equity ideas did not carry over into speculative crypto activity, and the platform felt the difference in its own results.

For observers, the takeaway is that retail behavior is not uniform across asset classes. Watch whether dip-buying in chips persists through further volatility, and whether crypto engagement recovers. Those two signals may say more about retail risk appetite than headline trading volumes alone.
