ZAWYA: Central Bank of Egypt permits banking agents to help open bank accounts, verify identities - TradingView
The Central Bank of Egypt has issued a regulatory framework allowing banking agents to assist in opening bank accounts and verifying customer identities, according to ZAWYA. The move extends the role of agent networks—typically retail outlets, post offices, and mobile money points already used for basic transactions—into onboarding functions that were previously handled almost exclusively inside bank branches.
The significance lies in reach. Agent-assisted onboarding can lower the cost of acquiring customers in areas with limited branch coverage, potentially drawing more of Egypt's large unbanked population into the formal financial system. It also supports the broader policy push toward digital payments and financial inclusion, themes Egyptian regulators have emphasised in recent years.
What to watch: the safeguards attached to the framework. Identity verification performed outside a branch raises questions about fraud controls, agent training, and liability when something goes wrong. Details on licensing requirements, transaction or account limits for agent-opened accounts, and supervision of agents will determine how quickly banks adopt the model. For listed Egyptian banks and payment companies, the framework could gradually expand deposit-gathering and fee income opportunities, though the pace will depend on implementation.
